Obituary for Margaret Assink

Margaret Assink, age 98 of Lynden, was taken to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, July 24, at the Lynden Christian Health Care Center.

Margaret was the daughter of Henry and Maggie (Dyk) Haveman and was born in Lynden on July 1, 1921. She attended Lynden Christian Elementary School and graduated from Lynden High School. On March 4, 1942 she married Floyd Assink. They were married 65 years, before Floyd passed away in November 2007. Together they raised their family and operated a dairy farm on the Assink Road north of Lynden.

Margaret was a lifetime member of the Second Christian Reformed Church where she was an active member of the Dorothea Bible Study and the church charity quilters. She also worked part-time for several years as the elementary school librarian for Lynden Christian School. Margaret very much enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, gardening, and needlecraft.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Henrietta and Wanda, brothers Stan and Marion, and son-in-law Jack Youells. She is survived by her sister Dolly Van Loo and sister-in-law Gladys (Marion) Haveman. She is also survived by her children Mavis (Gary) Zondervan of Chino, CA; Donna Youells of Sun City West, AZ; Diane (Jim) Shelton of Birch Bay; and Dale (Grace) Assink of Lynden. Margaret loved her ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Margaret’s family is very thankful for the excellent care she received first at the Lynden Manor and then the Christian Health Care Center during the last few years of her life. We so appreciate the kind and loving staff who cared for all of us at both facilities.

You are invited to join Margaret's family for her Graveside Service at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 2, 2019 at Monumenta Cemetery followed by a 2 p.m. reception at Second Christian Reformed Church. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
