Obituary for Seymour "Stu" Stuurmans

Beloved Seymour “Stu” Stuurmans arrived at his Eternal Home on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 with his loving wife Luella by his side.

Seymour was born September 7, 1930 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to parents Cecil and Alyce (Koetje) Stuurmans. Stu was an outstanding basketball player and all round athlete at Lynden High School graduating in 1948. He went on to play basketball for Skagit Valley College, Washington State University, Western Washington University and finally the US Navy in Hawaii. A sports reporter for the Honolulu Star Bulletin once wrote “Stu was one of the best service athletes in Hawaii”. He later earned a place in the LHS Sports Hall of Fame.

Stu married Luella Stremler on January 29, 1955 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Together they had two daughters Jaylene (Bill deceased) Huelman and Canda (Lonnie deceased) Swanson. Stu will be greatly missed by his grandchildren R. Maine Abell, Mystina Abell Euper and Jeffrey Huelman; great grandchildren TreMaine, Thomas, Theseus, Lilli and James; sister Joyce Visser, sister in law Helen (Arv) Navis; brothers in law Bob (Diane) Korthuis, Lewis (Carol) Stremler, and Ken Stremler; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Early in his career Stu worked at Krooenberg Lumber Company then managed American Lumber Company in Denver, Colorado. He purchased a trucking business making it Stu’s Unloading Service, successfully operating for 20 years. Stu and Lue moved to Lynden in 1983 buying and refurbishing the Windmill Inn, then started Up-Rite Door Company and in his retirement drove for Hinton’s and Jerry Chambers Chevrolet.

Stu loved taking saltwater and lake fishing trips every summer. He enjoyed a good game of golf, hunting and was a member of Grace Baptist Fellowship.

Stu is preceded in death by his parents Cecil and Alice Stuurmans, siblings Marvin (Jule) Stuurmans and Elaine (August) Matter, sons in law Bill Huelman and Lonnie Swanson, brother in law Harold Visser, and sisters in law Elaine Korthuis and Jan Stremler.

In honor of Stu, visitation will be Thursday, September 26, 2019 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Gillies Funeral Home, 202 Front St., Lynden, WA 98264. The memorial service will be Friday, September 27 at 11 am at Grace Baptist Fellowship, 338 North Park St., Lynden. A private family burial preceded at Monumenta Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Samaritans Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C. 28607. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
